How To Charge The Right Price
Today we’re going over what you should be charging for your photography…with REAL numbers to go off of.
Before we jump in...
Know what your skill level is, and be real with yourself.
A great way to do this is to look up 5 photographers in your niche and compare your skill level to their skill level. Not in a degrading way, but analyze and be honest about where you are as a photographer—beginner, intermediate, or professional. And then charge accordingly.
Also, keep in mind that photo packages are the foundation of your photography quotes.
Don't expect your clients to only purchase from your premade packages. Clients are unique people with unique problems, so they're going to need custom packages that are tailored to their specific needs.
When you quote a client, there are five things to consider when setting your price:
- Your Time Spent Shooting
How long will the session last? And what is the minimum amount you want to get paid for a session? This is your "get-out-of-bed" fee.
- Equipment Used
Are you using expensive gear? Are you renting? You may want to include this in your pricing.
- Editing & Post-Production
How much time will you spend editing after a photoshoot? This factor can be easily overlooked.
- Deliverables
What will your client get? Prints, digital files, photo albums, social media clips?
- Happiness
How much do you enjoy the process of every task you do? If editing drains you, outsource it (hire a photo retoucher) or use software to speed it up (ex: Imagen.Ai). Make sure you’re pricing for what makes you happy.
What to Charge
Photographers charge based on either day rates or hourly rates. You decide which is best for your photography business.
Equipment Costs
If you’re renting or just bought new gear, spread that cost over several sessions. Add it to your pricing but don’t feel like you have to itemize it for your clients.
The Next Step:
In the last email I sent you, I said we'd go over sales and marketing. But I know you wanted to cut to the chase:
"How much do I charge??"
I didn't want to keep you waiting any longer so here's the email about pricing, and the NEXT email really will be about sales and marketing! We'll go over some strategies for getting clients.
Hopefully, this gave you some clarity on where to start and how to build your photo packages.
