CG #008: The 3 Little Pigs

Do you remember the story of the 3 little pigs?

Here I’ll refresh your memory!

Once upon a time, there were 3 little pigs and the time came for them to leave home and seek their fortunes.

But before they left, their mother told them...

And so they left and they built their houses.

The first little pig built his house with straw because it was the easiest thing to do.

The second little pig built his house out of sticks. It was a little stronger than the straw house.

And the third little pig built his house out of bricks.

Then the wolf comes and sees the first little pig in his straw house.

He said “Little pig, little pig, let me in! Or I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in!”

The little pig said “No, no, no! Not by the hairs on my chinny chin chin.”

But of course, the wolf blew the house in and he ate the little pig.

Then it repeats.

He sees the second little pig in his straw house, blows his house in, and eats him too.

Then the wolf comes to the house of bricks—the one the 3rd little pig built.

He huffs and he puffs but he can’t blow the house down.

So he climbs onto the roof to look for a way to break into the house.

The little pig sees what the wolf is trying to do, and lights a roaring fire in the fireplace. And then he places a large kettle of water on it.

When the wolf finally found the hole in the chimney he crawled down and...

KERSPLASH

right into the boiling water.

And that was the end of all the 3rd little pig’s troubles with the big bad wolf.

The Lesson: Don't Take Shortcuts In Business

The lesson in this story is what their mother said to them before leaving:

“Whatever you do, do it the best you can because that’s the way to get along in this world.”

Now I brought this story to your attention because it teaches us that we shouldn’t cut corners anywhere in life.

But especially as business owners.

After revisiting this children's story, what stood out to me is that business owners typically do business like 1 of the 3 little pigs.

Business Owners That're Like The 1st Little Pig:

  • They're hasty, they rush through tasks and slap things together with everything they do.
  • They’re only focused on the money they can make from their business.
  • And create poor-quality content. And I’m not just talking about grammar mistakes or formatting. Their content is bad because:
    • It offers no value to the audience
    • It offers information that’s irrelevant
    • It doesn’t resonate with their audience
    • It comes off "Salesy" and people don’t like feeling forced to buy something
    • And the content speaks to no specific audience which confuses social media algorithms and the people on those platforms

Business Owners That Are Like The 2nd Little Pig:

  • I picture them doing juuust enough in their business

OR

  • They’re putting a decent amount of effort into their content marketing and business. But, they have a lot of holes in their strategies, which could be by accident.
  • These type of business owners possibly need to do a little more research on their audience. Or invest in their education like taking courses and reading more books on their industry.

If you find yourself in this position where you think you did all the right things to grow your business such as:

  • Posting Content
  • Strategizing
  • Researching
  • Showing Up On Camera

And you genuinely care about helping people with your business. But the content marketing part is just not clicking for you, and you can’t seem to figure out the missing piece to this business puzzle.

I made my eBook, Content Done Right, just for you.

It has all the information you need to build a solid content foundation for your business and grow.

Business Owners That're Like The 3rd Little Pig:

  • These business owners are diligent
  • They’re hardworking
  • Consistently engaging with their online audience
  • Their content is high-quality and gives value
  • Their audience connects with them because the content shows them “Hey, listen, I get you. I understand you. Here’s what you need, I have 1-2-3 things I want to offer you. Hey, here’s a little behind-the-scenes of what we do and why we do this.”
  • These type of business owners make tweaks and adjustments to their content, based on data and NOT what they think will work.
  • They’re not super bummed out when they fail at something (they own up to their losses and move on).
  • They understand content marketing and the game of business is a marathon, not a sprint. And, they’re willing to go the extra mile.
  • The "Big Bad Wolves" of competition, copycats, and bullies aren’t able to touch them.

The Takeaway From The 3 Little Pigs

So here’s what we should takeaway from this story of the 3 little pigs:

  • Don’t take shortcuts
  • Be as diligent and hardworking as the 3rd little pig
  • And listen to your mother!

That's all for this week! I hope you found today's newsletter valuable, and I wish you and your business all the best!
